Perth is the capital of Western Australia, a province that occupies roughly half of this vast country. Despite its large area, Perth is the only major city in the entire province, with a population of over two million people.
Often referred to as the most isolated city in the world due to geographical reasons, the nearest city with over 100,000 inhabitants is more than 2,000 kilometers away. However, once in Perth, it feels anything but isolated.
Many travelers overlook Perth, thinking there’s not much to do, but that’s such a shame because Perth is incredibly fun. It offers a lively atmosphere, a relaxed culture, vineyards nearby, impressive nature within reach, and a wide selection of pristine white beaches and clear blue waters. What’s not to like? Ask anyone who knows Australia well: West is best.
The city exudes a pleasant, laid-back vibe, and with its extensive beaches, it’s a real paradise for water sports enthusiasts, hikers, or those who just want to relax. Moreover, it is the sunniest capital in all of Australia. After the sun sets, you can grab a bite to eat to explore the city’s culinary scene and then continue the evening in one of the cool bars. Perth truly has it all.
Why Should You Go to Perth?
Perth is situated between the Swan River and the enormous Kings Park. One of its major pluses is that the locals are incredibly friendly and helpful. Additionally, there are plenty of beautiful sights to discover within relatively short distances. The city also boasts some fantastic beaches, which are very welcome during the hot summer months. Furthermore, it is the gateway to the picturesque Rottnest Island.
I haven’t even mentioned the numerous restaurants where you can enjoy excellent seafood, especially in Fremantle, located southwest of the city center.
Perth is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a smaller city than Sydney or Melbourne but still want to experience that delightful city vibe. Think of a bustling nightlife, charming coffee shops, and lively streets.
What Attractions Can You Find In and Around Perth?
Definitely visit Kings Park and Botanical Garden to enjoy the stunning views over the Swan River. Regular events are held here, and it’s fun to climb to the top of the DNA Tower. You can also see the city skyline from the park. Walk through the botanical gardens, follow one of the forest trails, or sit on the grass to relax. For food and drinks, you can go to the Botanical Cafe or Fraser’s Restaurant. If you’re looking for a smaller park, head to Hyde Park or Queens Gardens.
You must also take a day trip to Rottnest Island. With over 60 dreamy beaches and bays, it’s like stepping into paradise, especially if you want to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. A bonus is that there are no cars, so you can explore the island peacefully by bike. For beaches, I recommend Pinky Beach and The Basin. Finally, you can spot quokkas, small marsupials that resemble miniature kangaroos.
To get to Rottnest Island, take the ferry (tickets available on Bookaway) from Fremantle, an interesting town just outside Perth with picturesque houses, Fremantle Prison, and the Fremantle Markets. This market has something for everyone and is a gathering spot for musicians and artists. If you want to meet the locals, this is the place to go. Note that the market is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Also, stop by the Little Creatures Brewery, a local brewery since 2000. You can taste craft beer and enjoy good food on the terrace.
If you’re interested in art and culture, the Art Gallery of Western Australia is worth a visit. This huge building has a wide variety of artworks. Admission is free, though donations are appreciated. The gallery is closed on Tuesdays!
Looking for a dance? Head to No Lights No Lycra at Leederville Town Hall in West Leederville, where people gather to show off their moves. You can completely immerse yourself in the music, just like everyone else. Don’t expect a place with alcohol; you’re supposed to bring your own bottle of water.
Animal lovers should visit the Perth Zoo. This zoo pays a lot of attention to the animals, trying to create a natural habitat for them. You can even feed giraffes if you like. The different themes (Australia, Asia, and Africa) each have their own specific animals. I can’t think of another zoo with such a variety of species. It’s a must-visit.
If you’re looking for physical activity, renting a mountain bike at VeloCity Rides to explore Perth by bike is fun. David, the owner, provides excellent service and is very helpful. You can get everything you need, from special pedals to navigation.
Do you love shopping? Westfield Carousel is a great mall to visit. It’s one of the largest shopping malls in the city with over 220 stores. Other options include Karrinyup Shopping Centre, Westfield Booragoon, and Claremont Quarter for more luxurious items. Parking is often free at many malls if you’re driving.
Another enjoyable and educational activity is a Free Walking Tour of Perth. It’s also a great way to meet other backpackers. I recommend the tour offered by Oh Hey WA. Adie, the organizer, knows all the ins and outs of the city and shows you less well-known spots. It’s a great introduction to Perth, especially at the beginning of your trip. Another tip is the culinary tour from Barrack to Beaufort by Eat The Street Walking Tours.
Finally, there are several beautiful beaches worth visiting, such as the lovely Cottesloe Beach. More about the beaches in the section ‘What Beaches Are There in Perth?’
Are There Free Things to Do in Perth?
Yes, I’ve already mentioned several above. Visits to city parks, local markets, shopping malls, the Free Walking Tour, and the Art Gallery are all free activities you can do. To give you more options, here are a few more free activities:
If you love wine, the Swan Valley Region, about 25 minutes’ drive from the city center, is a great destination. Many local producers offer free wine, beer, cheese, chocolate, and even ice cream tastings. The region is known for its many wineries.
If you feel like watching a movie, Northbridge Piazza is worth a visit. They show free films on a big screen. Besides movies, they also organize free fitness and yoga classes and crossfit competitions. Oh, and free Wi-Fi is included.
It’s also worth cycling along the Swan River. You might think renting a bike costs money, but it doesn’t have to. At Free Wheeling Fremantle, you can borrow a bike for free to use in the Fremantle region. These bikes can be picked up at the Fremantle Visitor Centre.
If you love wildlife, Heirisson Island in the Swan River is worth visiting. You can see kangaroos lounging in the grass and enjoy the view. If you don’t have time to go to the Outback to see these animals, keep it simple and go here. You can walk there from the city center.
Lastly, let your cultural heart beat faster at the Perth Cultural Center. It’s a central spot where locals, backpackers, and other travelers come together to experience Perth’s local culture. Among others, the previously mentioned Art Gallery is located in this area. If you’re tired of the city’s hustle and bustle, relax at the Urban Orchard.
What Beaches Are There in Perth?
As I mentioned at the beginning, Perth and its surroundings have several beaches where you can sunbathe, swim, read a book, run, or do whatever you like. There are about twenty along the coast. You don’t have to look far to find yourself in paradise, I promise you that.
First, let’s mention the most famous beach: Cottesloe Beach. Close to the hustle and bustle of the busy city, but with a completely different atmosphere. You’ll see many surfers, runners, and you can have lunch at various cafes and eateries right by the water. Be sure to visit Il Lido Italian Canteen for delicious coffee. Watching the beautiful sunset is highly recommended. You won’t be alone, though, as many lorikeets in the trees create quite a volume. Also, check out the slightly less crowded North Cottesloe Beach.
Then there’s the beautiful Leighton Beach just north of Fremantle. If you’re looking for a quiet beach with kilometers of powdery white sand, this is the place to be.
Another recommendation in Fremantle is Bathers Beach, right next to the WA Shipwrecks Museum. It’s a great spot to watch the sunset and see the fishing boats come into the harbor.
The fourth is Scarborough Beach, located in Scarborough. It’s a great place to watch kitesurfers and have a picnic. Many young people flock here. There are numerous places to have a drink or eat. Or learn to surf at the Scarborough Beach Surf School. Allergic to sand or don’t want to get dirty? There’s also a lawn to lie on.
About 15 kilometers west of Perth is City Beach. The sand is incredibly soft, and the sunset is breathtaking. If you want to eat delicious seafood, I recommend Clancy’s Fish Bar.
Lastly, if you’re a surfer, I advise you to go to Trigg Beach. This beach is next to Scarborough Beach and has great waves. Watching the kiteboarders and surfers is also worth it.
